Interim evaluations of work achieved - Chloe Alldis
Main Product.
Our music video took us a fairly long time to make as it consisted of us choosing shots, editing them and adding in transitions. We also spent a lot of our free time completing this until be believed it was perfect. When planning our video we knew we wanted a narrative genre. However we decided that it would be a good idea to also contain the aspects of a performance based video, therefore creating a video that was effective for the viewers.
Ancillary Products.
When we came to create our ancillary products, we knew that they had to link in well with our music video. With this in mind we chose colours, text sizes and fonts, images, and layouts very carefully. For our magazine advertisement we kept it fairly simple yet effective in the sense that the image says it all about our genre of music. The girl is standing in front of a lake by herself, which gives the impression to the listeners that our music is relaxing, yet somewhat a type of music you would chose to listen to by yourself, linking in with our idea of a break up.
The front cover of our digipack four images, two of the whole band 'Reminiscence' and two of the singer herself. Here we have kept the font of the bands name the same as the font in the magazine advertisement, this is because we wanted the to relate and for listeners to see the font and instantly know the band.We used a font that resembles writing as we thought it looked more personal and fitted in with our genre well.
The back cover of our digipack again uses the same font as the magazine advertisement, however this time for the album title. This type of font, we believed looked quite quirky and again personal as it almost looks handwritten. We used swirls in just one corner, this was to show that our target audience is females, and the swirls represented 'love' to link in with the idea that swirls and fireworks are how you feel when you are in love. For the main image we decided we wanted to do something a different, this led to us choosing to have a black and white background with just one dominant colour showing, in this case it was her bright red dress which stood out the most. We believe this is effect as it draws the audiences attention to the image. We also used a red dress as it is associated with 'love' therefore it links in with our genre.
The inside of our digipack, behind the CD, we chose to have a heart made out of hands. This was purely because we believed it would have an impact on the reader as they took the CD out of the case. It could also have a meaning to the listener, making them remember the good times they have shared with loved ones. We have also used a quote so that people can relate more and also remember the band themselves.
For the inside of the digipack we chose to have the whole band together laying in the road. However having the picture itself in a more vibrant colour such as blue, gives the effect of 'sorrow' and perhaps an album that might shed a tear. This also links in again with the target audience. We have used another quote in this part of the digipack as well as writting our 'thank you's' to those who helped make our music video a great success.
CHANGES
We decided that our ancillary products do not work well with our genre or music. We also discovered, after receiving our audience feeback, that we didn't have a clear brand identity, therefore we changed the whole of our Digipack. We decided that vibrant autumn colours would aid our audience to understand our message of a 'journey', without us spelling it out. We also used more technologies such as the Green Screen and Photoshop. We retitled our album 'The Odyssey' as it had more impact and related more to our genre of music. The images that we have used we taken to show a deep connection between the artist and the audience, a way of connecting past or present experiences. The idea of the album is to not know what the future holds, and the digipack reflects this and our main song 'Just a taste'. We have changed our font and made it more dominant, as we discovered, after much research that artist use dominant bold fonts to sell their music. Each part of our digipack links to one another through different messages. Such as the front cover and the back cover, being linked but the fallen autumn leaves.

Font Analysis - Alexandra Hobbs
We have looked at various types of fonts for our album cover and our magazine advert, we wanted to find one that related to our genre but also related to the music that is on our album.
The first style we looked at was Clarity Gothic SF this font was easy to read but had a slight curl and wave to it we thought it would be good to use as it was simple, but as we thought about it we realised it was bland and amongst other albums if it was to be in a store.
So we decided to carrying on looking to find a better font, the next font we came across was Galaxy BT it was a bit more sophisticated than the previous font we chose but we still felt it wasn't right for a Title or Band name.
We carried on looking through the font types they had on photoshop but didn't feel any of them worked to the title and band name, we then went online to DaFont.com and came across a font called Dancing in the Minefields which had a curl to it but was clear to read, we felt this font would be best suited for our album name and our band name as in our research we found that artists that are marketed at teenagers and are in the pop/country genre have slightly curly fonts. We then chose this one but changed the colour to purple and it looked effective on our digipack.
Then we added text to our magazine advert and we wanted it to be less bold than the title so we chose to use a font from photoshop the font we chose was Gothic720 BT because it was clear and easy to read but at the same time was eye catching.
We didn't want to use the same font in our magazine advert as on our CD because on our peer assessment feedback sheets people said that we needed more variation within our fonts. We then settled on the font type Grenoble SF as it was easy to read and simplistic which we felt represented what the music was like as it is simply about break ups and love, although these topics are complicated once you have got through a break up it is clear and simple what went wrong.
After evaluating our ancillary products and deciding to do them again, we started to look at different fonts to create more of a sense of brand identity. We established that we wanted the title of the band and the title o the album to be different from each other and from all of the other font, so we searched online and found a site called 1001 free font and found 4 fonts that really stood out to us that we thought would be best to attract our target audience.
From this we realised we wanted something not to young for our audience and more edgy to give it that slightly more sophisticated to show to the audience that the music is serious and meaningful. So we picked 'Hawaii Killer' as our font type for the band name and 'Birth Of A Hero' for the album title as these fonts where similar in the way that the are both bold and slightly scratched out but different in the 'Hawaii Killer' has more swirl and detail so it will stand out more and people will see who the band is clearer.
We first started to look on Microsoft word for a good font but none of them really stood out to us. We then went through the fonts on photoshop to see if any of them would relate to the two that we had chosen for the titles after searching and trying many fonts out we used the site Picasa and found the font Gabriola, it fitted well with our other two fonts as it had a slight swirl and curve to it.
<- Gabriola font.

Synopsis Planning
Our story line for our music video is about a young girl that is in a relationship and is at the happiest point in her life, something goes wrong but we don't show you what happened and we see her trying to get over him with another guy but it is not as easy as she thinks. We wanted to catch the raw tension that teenagers go through and the pain it can cause them throughout a relationship. This story line fit perfectly with our song because it is a very sad and depressing. We see her struggling to come to terms with what has happened and how she can never get over the guy she loved the most.

Magazine Advertisement Analysis
The White Stripes advert is very simple, yet effective. They use only 3 colours: Black, white and red; which links closely with the name of the band. The main part of the advert is a photograph of them, in which, again the band are only wearing black, red and white and are against a plain white background. The font is block capitals, the band's name in white with a red text box around it, the album name is underneath in white and slightly smaller than the band name. They also have a picture on the album cover in the middle of the text area and the image area, which shows people what they are looking for. The advert is effective because the main focus is the photograph and the only written information given is what the viewer needs to know.
This magazine advertisement has three colours, white, black and violet - which is relevant to the title of the album 'High Violet'. The image on the advert is the album cover, which is very plain with a white background and a grey pattern. The bottom half of the advert is just text, about the album itself, when it is available etc. The biggest piece of text (apart from the title) is in the middle and tells the reader the availability date. This advert resembles a gig poster, which is quite a clever way of displaying the information about the album and in this way it can be said to be effective. However, this advertisement is hardly eye catching due to the lack of image and too much text. Unless you were a fan of this band it would be unlikely you would stop to look at it.

History of the music press. Alexandra Hobbs
1950 - 1960
Melody maker/ New music express, 1952 - The new music express was first published, when the magazine was first published its main content was music charts and the latest singles and new bands gig listings.
Melody makers has an intended target audience of musicians.
There was also a change in society because the press of music was becoming bigger and making the bands and artists more accessible to their fans and about them and there music.
1960 - Rolling stone was created by Jann Wenner
This magazine is based on music, liberal politics and popular culture. It is published every 2 weeks as has been since its first release in the 1960's
1970's
Saw the start of glam rock and then a short while after prog. Rock became more fashionable.
New music express changed its name to NME and style to adapt with the musical change that was happening at the time, to adapt to the punk vibe that was popular at the time.
In the mid 1970's NME started to write about serious issues that were happening in the world, the meaning behind bands and the songs they produced.
1978 - smash hits magazine was first published. New magazine for younger audiences as it focuses on colours, food, pop and lifestyle.
Early 1980's
Readers started to abandon NME as it became to obsessed with politics, The style had become more important than the content.
Independent companies began producing fanzines, which were magazines for the fans about the band and only the information they wanted, for example show dates new single release dates.
Style in pop was big hair and make up.

Rough Cuts
When filming shots in different locations for our music video, we made sure that we had enough footage throughout. When it came to editing what we had filmed and putting it all together we discovered that we actually had too much footage, which isn't a bad thing as it meant that we could experiment more with transitions on the shots. There was footage that we didn't need, however we were lucky enough to have it there just in case.
When it came to showing our Rough Cut to the class to gain some audience feedback, we found out that their was a few things we needed to change or in so aspects, add. for example, as it was our rough cut, meaning we hadn't quite finished, some of our green screen shots didn't have a background to them. This was one of the main and only positive criticism that we came across. We also managed to gain a lot of positive feedback on the angles we used throughout and the few transitions we added. Our lip syncing was the the most common positive note we gained as many people described it is 'spot on'.

Genre Analysis - music
Taylor Swift - white horse
Swift also shares the same record label as our music video 'Big Machine Records'
The video is a love story that has gone wrong and is based on a Narrative video genre and the genre of county for the music.
Kelly Clarkson - Mr know it all
Clarkson's video song is also about a relationship that has gone wrong. It doesn't use a narrative as it is more performance based. However it is a Country genre and it uses many techniques that we plan to use in our music video.
Katy Perry - Thinking of you
Perry's video is based on a narrative which has a twist and it hasn't gone wrong in the sense of a break up but due to a call of duty. The genre is more pop, however the beginning can be linked to country due to its soft mellow sounds.

HMV Research - Alexandra Hobbs
We were asked to go to HMV to do some research for our digipak, whilst in there we were set some tasks to complete. The first task was to stand in front of a range of CD's and see which one catches you attention. When i did this i found that JLS album caught my eye because it was colourful yet simple and the name was large and clear font, it was also in white which contrasted with the brighter colours going on in the backgroud.
I also found that the music DVD's were located to the right hand side of the store near the back and they were arranged alphabetically. HMV mainly showcased performance DVD's i would say about 65% were performance, 20% were documentaries 5% were compilations and 10% were film. The purpose of a music DVD is to showcase the artist and there music and what the are all about and represent.
I found that the CD's were located across the whole of the back and to the left at the front of the store and they were also arranged alphabetically, and some sections were arranged by genre. This shows that the relative importance of CD's is more than DVD's because an artist will release more CD's so more people just by the CD.
When we were inside the store, One Direction was playing at the listening posts this is most probably becasue there new single had just been released and the record company want it to be heard a lot so they make more sales.

Storyboard changes. Alexandra Hobbs
Due to one of our actors dropping out, we had to change our storyboard quite a lot. We changed it form a love and break up story where the boy moves on to a love and break where the girl moves on but isn't happy with her new boyfriend and misses her old one, we changed it by using a different actor but using the same setting to show to the audience that she misses him and doesn't want to be with her new boyfriend, we also changed the bit were she is looking out a photo of her old boyfriend with his new girlfriend because it wouldn't work as we swapped the roles, so we added in more green screen singing shots and more shots of her with her new boyfriend.
We also couldn't get to the beach location to film part of the video there, that is another reason as to why we had to change the actors and therefore change the storyboard.
Our changes did set us a bit behind schedule but we are a devoted team that worked hard together to catch up the time that we had lost, although we could not produce our original ideas, our new ones where just as creative and we felt we still made a successful video and added a new meaning and interpretation on the video which could relate to more people.

Alterations made along the way. Alexandra Hobbs
Some of the alterations we have had to make in the process are changing the filming schedule, we had to delay some of the shooting for various reasons such as some people couldn't make a certain date.
Other alterations made are the costumes we have changed what we wanted the main singer to wear so that it would be more suitable to the music genre.
We also had to change some of the music video story because we were unfortunately let down with one of our actors, so we kindly asked someone else if they could be in it instead as we were running short of filming time.
Due to changing the story board we also had to change our animatic video to fit with the changes.
Although we had to change a few things from what we originally wanted to do, we felt the changes made along the way helped us develop a more relate able video for our target audience.

Health and Saftey
During our music video we may come across many different Health and Safety issues, we have to make sure that we are fully aware of what is around us and how to deal with it whilst filming. We have four places in which we will be filming; St Peters School for green screen shooting, NewLands Corner, A House for bedroom and a few other shots and The Beach. There are different thing we will have to be careful for, whilst using the green screen, we must make sure everything is safely attached and not in the way of anything or anyone to course potential harm or damage. Whilst at NewLands Corner we must make sure we are not in the way of the general public to cause annoyance and the weather could also be a problem here, we must make sure we are equipped if we suddenly have rain. Also NewLands Corner is very hilly and uneven we must make sure we are careful with equipment, not to drop or break it whilst filming. When filming in a house or bedroom, there are not many problems that will occur but the normal checks just to make sure nothing is in the way when filming and the equipment and everyone is safe. At the beach we must make sure that the equipment doesn't get wet either from the potential rain or water from the sea, also to make sure sand doesn't affect the equipment and that all of the actors are safe if entering the water, also the general public, we must be aware of them and to make sure we don't cause annoyance again. These are the general Health and Safety procedures we just have to make sure we follow them and we will be safe whilst filming.

Record company name/profile logo
The music industry, a record label is a brand and a trademark associated with the marketing of music recordings and music videos. There are many different record label's all over the world for all types of genre within the music industry for example;Polydor, Island, Sony, Def Jam, Big Machine Records, Syco, Universal and Warner Brothers. We have decided to use the record label company Big Machine Record because this is the company that signed Taylor Swift and she is are inspiration and role model throughout so we are going to stick by her and go for the same record label company, also they specialize in our chosen genre of county music so it would be prefect.
Big Machine is based in Nashville, Tennessee, and is distributed by Universal Music Group. The label has one Grammy for Album of the Year, awarded to Fearless from Taylor Swift.
In November 2007, Big Machine Records founded a subsidiary imprint called Valory Music Group. Acts signed to this roster include Jimmy Wayne (who was formerly signed to Big Machine), Jewel, and Justin Moore. By late 2008, the label began promoting Canadian acts Adam Gregory and Emerson Drive, who are also signed to Midas Records. Big Machine ended promotion for the two artists in 2009. Reba McEntire joined Valory in 2009, in association with her own label, Starstruck.
Big Machine joined with Universal Republic in June 2009 to found a new label, Republic Records Nashville.

still Frame Analysis - Alexandra Hobbs
Maroon 5 - She Will Be Loved
This first still frame shows the main singer turning around in slow motion, this introduces him to the audience, after this it has sharp cuts of clips of whats about to happen in the music video before he then jumps into the pool in front of him and as he does this it uses the effect of slow motion to show that it could be a memory as when hes under the water he puts his hands on his head as if he were thinking perhaps about a wrong decision he had made. As this starts off in slow motion then has clips that are fast and quickly cut together then returns to slow motion, it could give the audience an insight into how the song is going to be.
The setting is in various places it starts in a country club style place for wealthy people, as it shows people sitting on sun beds and there are waiters with drinks walking around the place. There is also some shots of the two women who are the focus of the video shopping together, as a memory of the singers, It also goes to a club where the band is playing, which then introduces the rest of the band, after this towards the end of the song it returns back to the country club place, It starts where it ends to show the audience it could have been memories of the singer.
This has heavily influenced our music video as we used various flashback throughout as memories and it also ends where it starts with her looking through the scrap book

Within this music video there are not that many characters within the story being told, there is the main singer, he is first introduced at the start in a slow motion shot of him turning around this could show to the audience that he may have done something bad and is turning to look back as a person, we can tell it is a serious matter with his facial experssion being very serious. The next people to be introduced are his girlfriend and an older woman which he is attracted to they are shown in the fast cuts after he has turned around at the very start, showing them in fast cuts could connote to the audience that they are a memory on his mind because it contrasts with his slow motion shot. There is also one more character within this music video and thats the older womans husband who is first seen ignoring her which makes the audience empathise with her and understand more why she goes off with the main signer because she wants attention and to be loved, he is then later seen hitting her at the Club in slow motion to create a more emotional impact on the audience.
Within this music video props arent used that much, there is drinks and sunbed at the Club and a car when he is sitting watching the girls shop, and when they are performing they have all of there instruments with them. The Costumes in this music video for the older woman were sophisticated compared to the younger girl who was more casual. The male character was in a casual top and trousers compared to the older man who looked smart with his hair combed and gelled back this shows status within the video.
When the band was playing there was a long shot to show all of them, but mainly they used close ups so that the audience could see each memeber, and there was a close of there instruments aswell.
Throughout this music video although a range of shot types were used it was mainly close ups of eyes for example at the end of the video this shot was also used with a fade effect over another clip at the very beginning which shows the audience it was a memory. Also using close ups a lot you can see the emotion in the characters faces and the hurt in their eyes. At the end it was a shot reverse shot of the young girls eyes and the man looking back but whilst with the older woman.

9 Frame Still Analysis - Alexandra Hobbs
Taylor Swift - Back To December
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUwxKWT6m7U&ob=av2e
This first shot is an opening shot so is a long shot showing the setting of the video, as it is called back to december it is looking back on the past and so it shows the snowy weather. Having this shot to establish the setting is common in most Pop Country genres as most of them tell a story which the target audience can relate to.
The 7th image is another close up of her putting a note into his jacket, which he has been wearing for the whole of the video, this shows to the audience what she has been doing is in the past, maybe back in December before things went wrong. It could also show what the male part has been thinking the whole video, thinking and hoping she has been feeling the same way as him perhaps. The use of a mid shot is to show distinctively that it is his jacket. The note is also a very love struck teenage thing to do which also helps to relate to their target audience who may be going through similar troubles.
The 9th and final shot is a long shot of him walking away from the School field, this is very much like the start of the music video, as it started with him walking across to a field and that was also a long shot. Also this shot could suggest to the audience that he is going to find the girl after perviously finding the note to make things right again. This repetition may be useful in the telling of the story which is the main thing that this type of genres music videos are about.

Having this shot to establish the setting is common in most Pop Country genres as most of them tell a story which the target audience can relate to.
In the second shot it is a close up shot of her singing, throughout most of this music video whenever she is singing it is usually a close up of her lips and mouth, i think this may be to show that she means the words that she is coming out with also being able to see her facial experssions brings the emotion of the song out more within the video. Her clothes are light brown, beige colours which links with her background as it is light outside of her because of the snow.
The Third still frame is of her on her sitting alone on her bed. This is a long shot to show her looking down and upset and alone reminiscing about how things used to be, it portrays the emotion behind the song and the story of the video as well. This shows she is going through heartache which her audience feel that they can relate to.
The fourth picture is a close up of her love interests eyes looking forward thinking about the past or so the lyrics to the song suggest. This close up shows the upset and thought that is behind his eyes. He is also dressed in brown colours but are darker than Taylor's clothes to maybe contrast the different emotions they are both feeling as he wants to move on but she is stuck on his mind just as she also cant stop thinking about him.
The fifth image is of her love interest from behind sitting with his head in his hands, possible realising his mistake of leaving her and that he still loves her and misses her. Having him placed centre helps to show the mise - en - scene of the snow around him and the setting of a school American football field, this show the viewer the target audience is more likely to be teenagers which is common for most Pop Country genres.
The 6th still frame shows a long shot of an empty table and 2 chairs showing a memory that she misses from being with him and the snow represents the December part of it, when there relationship was good and happy and how time has passed and she hasn't moved anything because she wants to preserve the memory that was once there. This is telling a story as the clips link to the lyrics that are being sung, which we have found is very common in this genre so we have taken that into consideration when making our music video.
The 8th still frame shows him sitting on the stands finding the note, again this is a close up.This particular close up could connote to the audience that him finding the note after missing her throughout the video is fate and that he should still be with her, which is what most of the target audience that are going through a similar situation hope will happen to them. Using close ups seeming to be a reoccurring thing in this music video which we will have to take into consideration when we storyboard our video.
